Chapter Seventeen
Luce took a long deep breath. She felt her soul settle as the aromas of the Korean restaurant soothed her.
“Come on, Grandfather. Auntie won’t bite and if she does, I’m sure she has good reason.” Luce pulled on Tamiko’s hand, dragging him in to the restaurant.
“When you said you were taking me for some home cooking I was thinking Sushi or that diner down the street that serves those big fat French fries we like.”
Luce chuckled watching her grandfather search the restaurant. She pulled his hand harder before she stepped behind him and nudged his shoulder.
“No greasy kid stuff tonight. Come on and stop acting like you’re going to get a spanking.”
“Ugh!”
“Stop already.”
“Goddaughter.”
Luce felt her grandfather stiffen at the sound of her aunt’s voice.
“Stop it,” she whispered. “Auntie, how is my favorite aunt?”
“I see you brought the riff-raff with you.”
“Don’t push it, old woman.” Tamiko rolled his eyes at Luce.
“Grandfather.”
“Kaida.”
“She’s my godmother.”
“She’s a pain in the ass.”
“Maybe, but she’s as much my blood as any aunt could be, so be respectful.”
Luce couldn’t believe she was schooling her grandfather on the rules of respect when he had taught her everything she knew about the subject. Tamiko and her aunt had kept a respectable distance ever since her mother’s funeral. She wasn’t privy to all the details of their falling out, but she knew it had to do with her mother’s decision to stay married to her father. She could guess whose side her auntie was on. She also guessed by the guilt her grandfather carried, he had convinced her mother to stay married because it was expected in their culture. Luce’s aunt didn’t agree with the decision and told him so at the funeral.
“Tamiko.”
“Sung.”
“How’s your hand, Kaida?”
Her aunt scooped Luce up in an embrace that forced the breath out of her and almost lifted her off her feet. The overly demonstrative hug wasn’t for her benefit and she knew it. She was starting to feel like a pull-toy as each of her elders tugged her in different directions, trying to show who loved her more.
“Put her down, old woman before you hurt yourself and I have to pay you disability.”
“Oh stop barking like an old junk yard dog. You get your money’s worth from me. By the way, sixty isn’t old.”
Luce’s gaze bounced from her aunt to her grandfather and back again. Her eyebrows raised in a question and she caught and searched her grandfather’s gaze for an answer.
“What’s she talking about, Grandfather?” Luce said.
“What’s your aunt talking about? What happened to your hand?”
Luce shoved the gloved hand deep into her jacket and rocked back on her heels. She had tossed the bandages a week ago, but the stitches were still in and she hadn’t thought to tell her grandfather about her self-inflicted wound. Actually, it hadn’t come up and she wasn’t in a rush to remember that night and why she’d accidentally cut her hand. She knew she would have to fess up, as soon as her grandfather told his secrets.
